This isn’t about airplanes. It’s about power. It’s about a MAGA ideology that sees international cooperation as weakness, and strong-arming allies as a demonstration of strength. It’s a playbook ripped straight from the authoritarian handbook, and we in Canada need to recognize it for what it is.
For years, we’ve navigated the complex relationship with the United States with a mixture of diplomacy, compromise, and, let’s be honest, a healthy dose of anxiety. We understand the economic realities of our dependence on the American market. But at what cost? How much are we willing to sacrifice in terms of our own values, our own industries, and our own decision-making power to appease a political force that seems increasingly detached from reason?
The time for polite acquiescence is over. We need a bold, assertive strategy that prioritizes Canadian interests and protects us from the fallout of Trump’s trade wars. This means diversifying our trading partners, investing in Canadian innovation, and strengthening our domestic industries.
We also need to be clear about our values. We believe in fair trade, environmental responsibility, and social justice. We will not be bullied into compromising on these principles to appease a resurgent strain of right-wing populism that threatens to undermine democracy itself.
Some will argue that this is alarmist. That Trump is just posturing, that these threats are empty. But history has taught us that we ignore such warning signs at our peril. The rise of authoritarianism is rarely a sudden event. It’s a slow creep, a gradual erosion of norms and institutions that, if left unchecked, can lead to catastrophic consequences.
We need leaders who understand the gravity of the situation, leaders who are willing to stand up for Canadian sovereignty, and leaders who can articulate a vision for a more just and equitable future. While some politicians pander to populist sentiments, and others seem content to simply manage the status quo, we need bold action. We need innovative solutions. We need a commitment to building a truly independent and resilient Canada, capable of weathering any storm, regardless of what unfolds south of the border.
This isn’t just about trade. It’s about who we are as a nation. It’s about our values, our identity, and our future. And it’s time we started acting like it. It’s time to put Canada first, not as a slogan, but as a guiding principle for all our actions. The alternative is to continue down a path of dependence and vulnerability, a path that ultimately leads to the erosion of our sovereignty and the undermining of our democratic values. Let’s not let that happen.
