Let’s be clear: advocating for secession is a democratic right. But actively seeking support from foreign entities, particularly those with a vested interest in destabilizing Canada for their own gain, crosses a dangerous line. It’s not just about disagreeing on policy; it’s about potentially inviting external influence into our political system, a move that fundamentally undermines our self-determination.
Why the U.S.? Because, let’s face it, Alberta separatism has long been fuelled by ideologies that resonate with certain elements of the American right. Ideologies that prioritize unfettered resource extraction over environmental sustainability, that champion a narrow, isolationist nationalism, and that often flirt with the rhetoric of grievance and division. This ideological alignment makes them susceptible to being pawns in a larger geopolitical game, a game where Canadian interests are secondary.
Consider the timing. We’re living in an era of rising global instability, where authoritarianism is on the march and democratic norms are under attack. We see it in the rise of populism across Europe, in the erosion of voting rights in the U.S., and, yes, in the increasingly strident rhetoric of certain political figures here in Canada.
While I’m not going to directly accuse anyone, it’s impossible to ignore the parallels between the rhetoric employed by some conservative politicians in Canada and the playbook of right-wing populists elsewhere. The constant attacks on the media, the demonization of “elites,” the promotion of conspiracy theories – these are all hallmarks of a movement that seeks to undermine trust in institutions and sow division among the population.
And that’s precisely why Eby’s warning is so crucial. We need to be vigilant against any attempt to exploit regional grievances for political gain, especially when it involves courting foreign actors who may not have Canada’s best interests at heart. We need to reaffirm our commitment to a united and sovereign Canada, a Canada that is strong enough to resist the siren song of separatism and the manipulative tactics of those who seek to divide us.
This isn’t about stifling legitimate debate. It’s about recognizing that some ideas are inherently dangerous, and that certain alliances can have devastating consequences for our country. It’s about understanding that true patriotism lies not in tearing down our nation, but in building it up, together.
We must stand firm against any attempt to undermine Canadian sovereignty, whether it comes from within or from without. The future of our country depends on it. The rise of authoritarianism depends on division and destabilization.
